The
starting place for flamenco has to be the caves of the
Sacromonte which were settled centuries ago by Gypsy
families such as the Mayas and Heredías, some who still
live and perform there. It is certainly worth wandering
around the neighbourhood even if you are not tempted
by the Flamenco cave shows. Despite having become a
tourist attraction, and in the past having a shady reputation
these caves are still a good source of Flamenco. Almost
all the well known flamencos from Granada have at one
time performed in these caves: Ana Calí, Fuensanta 'La
Moneta', Jaime Heredía 'El Parrón', Emilio Maya, Eva
Yerbabuena, Mario Maya, Juan Andrés Maya and Manolete.
Another attraction is the absolutely stunning views
of the Alhambra Palace, and many terraces with bars
where you can sit in the sunshine and enjoy them. The
Sacromonte hill may be in a big city but it has all
the characteristics of a sleepy village where you have
stepped back in time. Of course at night flamenco takes
over as well as caves with discos and a large number
of tourists and it can be a lively noisy place.

One other Tablao which is worth mentioning is found
at the top of the Albaicín, the neighbourhood next door
to the Sacromonte. This is not a cave but is well worth
a mention for the high quality shows they put on. The
Mirador is also a wonderful viewing point to see the
Albaicín, the Alhambra palace and the City of Granada
spread out before you.

Peñas are flamenco clubs. They present Flamenco performances
throughout the year and are generally known for putting
on good quality acts. It is worth going to the Peña
Platería in the Albaicín, the oldest Peña in Spain,
simply for a drink or lunch as the place is filled with
wonderful flamenco photographs, and while you are there
ask at the bar about any public performances.
